2025 Recital Information

Our 2025 Spring Recital Theme is……

The Dance Class is happy to announce our 2025 Spring Recital Theme….. Riley Turns 13!

Emotions take center stage as our dancers navigate the complexities of growth, change, and self-discovery. The show explores the themes of joy, sadness, fear, anger,  love and more, capturing the beautiful, raw journey of balancing these feelings. Through expressive movement and vibrant choreography, the performance delves into the intricate emotional landscapes that shape who we are, showing how even the most challenging emotions can lead to growth, connection, and transformation. Join us on June 1st and 2nd as we celebrate 13 years of emotions and memories at the FirstOntario Centre for the Arts Milton!

It’s that time again! Please read through all of the information and make note of the important dates listed.

Where ???  When ???

The Spring Recital will be held on Sunday, June 1st, AND Monday, June 2nd at the FirstOntario Centre Milton.  Both performances begin at 6:00 pm.

All dancers aged 4 and up (including KinderDance Classes through to Advanced Classes) will be participating in both shows.

What if my child is 2-3 years old???

All Pre-School Class dancers (Pre-School Ballet, Pre-School Jazz) will perform at our In-House Performance at The Dance Class on Saturday, June 5th. Therefore your child is NOT INVOLVED in the Spring Recital and there is no need to read the remainder of this email. You will be receiving a separate package with information about your Open House shortly. We would love to see some of our Pre-School dancers in the audience,  so keep an eye on when tickets go on sale. Both performances will sell out.

Philosophy, Policies, and Procedures

To celebrate our 13th season, The Dance Class will present “Rylie Turns 13!”  We are thrilled to have our TDC dancers participate in this fun event!

An important part of dance training includes learning through performance. This experience helps build self-esteem, self-assurance, and confidence. Although performance opportunities can help prepare some students for a possible career in dance, this experience also contributes to children’s success in non-dance activities. The onstage experience can result in better in-school presentations, improved social skills, and strong interview skills for future education and job opportunities.

The rehearsal process for the recital is a tremendous and worthwhile learning experience as well. “You can’t play in the Championship game if you don’t show up for the playoffs!” is what we like to say!  This experience helps the students develop information retention skills, time management, goal setting, and achievement, and by working with their classmates on a group performance, they learn the positive aspects of working as a team to create a unified end product.

Students and parents hold equal responsibility in committing themselves to our recital production. It takes our entire studio to make the production a true success—from the directors to the instructors, to the dancers, to the parents, to our volunteers. We thank you in advance for making the sacrifices necessary for your child’s success.

Therefore…

We have created this handbook in an effort to clarify what is expected from you in terms of commitments for the annual recital. With a clear understanding of the event, we can provide an entertaining, family-oriented production that will be remembered by your family for years to come!

Glossary of Terms

We don’t mean to overwhelm you.  If you don’t understand anything that you have just read, please shoot us an email! In the meantime, here is a list of terms we throw around a lot – and what they mean to you!

Act 1 / Act 2 – This is the theatre term for the “first half” or the “last half” of the show. Your dancer may perform in either section or both if they are taking multiple classes! A show order will be sent home via email shortly for you to see which act your dancer will be performing in.

Intermission – The “7th inning stretch” if you will.  It is the pause where the lights come up in the audience, and it is the recommended time to get up to stretch your legs, use the washroom and grab a beverage. During the show, we strongly encourage all audience members to remain

seated and avoid entering and exiting the theatre. It can be very distracting for the audience and most importantly the dancers on stage. No one is allowed on stage, including toddlers, during intermission, before or after the show, except for performers.

Dress Rehearsal (Sunday Morning June 1st) – The BIGGEST DEAL!  The final lead-up to the show.  This is a rehearsal that takes place on stage with full technical backup.  The teachers will take every group on stage and familiarize them with the space.  The dancers must be in full hair, make-up and costume as the lighting technicians will be creating an atmosphere for the dance based on what they see. The show will be run in order from start to finish although in a disjointed fashion. This is a closed rehearsal, no tickets will be sold and parents will not be allowed backstage or in the audience for this process. This is an exciting and magical time for all dancers.

COSTUMES

We spend many hours choosing costumes for each class. We attend costume conventions and seminars to see the best products that are available for our dancers. Our costumes are always age-appropriate. Recital Costumes include any accessories (hats, gloves, etc.) with the exception of tights and shoes. Parents are responsible for purchasing the appropriate coloured tights and shoes required for regular classes, as noted in the TDC dress code.

All dancers in recital will wear  A CENTRE PARTED LOW BUN (unless noted by your child’s teacher in class.

Costumes will be distributed as soon as they are ready. Costumes will NOT be handed out until accounts are paid in full.  To ensure that there is no costume damage, students are not to  wear their costumes, accessories, or any new tights prior to the Recital. After the recital, you may use your costume as you please as it is yours to keep!

Costume Care

We HIGHLY recommend that each student’s name be placed in his/her costumes, shoes, tights, and accessories. Please store all costumes in a safe place. Please do not wash costumes. Dry clean them only (after the recital) if you wish.

RECITAL TIPS

Always have a second pair of tights on hand at the recital (without any holes or runs)

-Place costumes in a garment bag for travel

-Place the dancer’s name in costumes, shoes, and all accessories (including tights)

-Tights will be available for purchase from the desk in the month of May-please stop by the studio to purchase a pair or backup pair for the show. Tights can also be purchased at InStep ActiveWear in Town.

-Dancers in ballet routines will need PINK tights and dancers in jazz or tap dances will need NUDE tights. Dancers in acro routines can wear bare legs or NUDE stirrup tights.

Hair and Make-Up

All-female dancers are requested to wear light stage make-up: lipstick, blush, eye shadow (earth tones preferred), and mascara.

Hair should be in a low centre parted bun with no bangs. You can see how to accomplish this by watching the following videos, or by stopping by the desk for a demo with Miss Rosemary.

RECITAL POLICIES

Backstage

Family members and friends are not permitted backstage or in the dressing rooms during rehearsals or the Recital. The same applies during intermission and after the show. There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space, and dressing rooms are private areas. Please remind your family and guests to be respectful of these areas. Any parent who refuses to follow the rules will be asked to leave the theatre. Students are also restricted from leaving the backstage area and entering the lobby during intermission unless they are being signed out for the duration of the show.

Dressing Room Etiquette

Students must respect everyone’s space and property in the dressing rooms. The students will spend more time in the dressing rooms than onstage, so they are required to keep their space organized and clean. Students may bring water bottles with water ONLY into the dressing rooms.

Snacks

Dry, non-messy, NUT-FREE snacks (goldfish crackers, granola bars, etc.) may be brought as snacks for rehearsals and the show. (please, no yogurt, applesauce, fruit etc.) Please pack lots of water for your dancer but never juice boxes, Gatorade, etc as it can leave a sticky mess. Kindly send a large t-shirt or tracksuit that your dancer can wear while eating in costume.

VOLUNTEERS

Backstage Helpers will be in the dressing room with their designated class throughout the whole show. Responsibilities will include helping their designated groups change costumes, taking younger students to the bathroom, providing entertainment (for younger dancers), and making sure the group is lined up at the appropriate time for their dance(s), the Opening, and the Finale. Backstage Helpers will be able to watch their dancer’s class from the backstage area.

We must stress that as a backstage volunteer, you will be in charge of a group of children which may or may not include your child. If your child is not in your designated group, you must be sure to tend to your assigned group first and foremost and allow the other volunteers to prepare your child.

ALL Backstage Volunteers will be required at the theatre on Sunday, June 1st from 8:30 am-11:45 am, 12:30 pm – 3:35 pm, 5:00-9:45 pm or Monday, June 3rd  5:00-9:45 pm.

If your child has special needs or requires any kind of accommodations, we absolutely MUST know about them ASAP. The recital is a busy time and individual concerns cannot be fully addressed at the last minute. We are happy to make accommodations for any students to make this the best experience possible for all dancers involved.

STUDENT SAFETY

All dancers will be signed in and out of the backstage area for both dress rehearsal and shows, through the MinMaxx theatre.  This is a necessary procedure to ensure the safety of each child.  Please be patient during drop-offs and pick-ups, this can be a slow process but worthwhile to ensure everyone’s safety.
